TRUST: Should you trust yourself over your dentist, or anybody else ?

In light of the pandemics, anything literary could happen. And as infection rates in Thailand have risen increasingly for a few days, it convinced me to believe that another enforced lockdowns would happen soon, so I book an appointment to see a dentist to have my teeth cleaned before it is too late to do so.

Initially, I expected a teeth cleaning, but the dentist told me that

“you got a little tooth decay, shall I perform tooth filling?”.

Honestly, I did not believe her.

The reason why I did not trust her is because I had the same kind of experience before. There was another dentist who told me I got 3 tooth decays, a year ago. So this time I was skeptical about it, too, so I went to a big dental hospital to get a second opinion. At the hospital, I did imagery test, and the hospital’s dentist considered that I had no tooth decay, and even asked for a third opinion from another dentist there. So I was super-reassured that my teeth are still fine. I learnt that I must be super-realistic when it comes to dental care, I must get all the information I need to know before allowing the dentist to do anything to my teeth and my body.

At the end of the day, it is my teeth and it is my body, I therefore should think for myself how should my teeth be treated, and it should be treated properly. I must not be nonchalant, not even if the person who is asking to fill my teeth is a specialist like this certified dentist.

I never knew, and I shall not know what is the real intention behind that dentist who told me I got a cavities. But in that moment, I must do everything to protect my own benefit. That said, I should trust my instinct whether something that is going on there is right or not quite right.

Nevertheless, I researched for more information as the fact that I cannot trust a dentist is actually quite disturbing. I found an article says that the dentist is like an artisan, some might think it is time to fill your teeth, some might think it is not necessary until it begins to be harmful. So you should pick the one that meets your artistic criteria. Well, I trust the dentist who got enough proofs (Imagery test and second opinion), though.

This event also makes me think about a tailor. You should hire a tailor whose suit and shirt look nice on you, and you like them, too.

The same as acting teacher, I worked with many good ones. They are a lot of good teachers, but there are a few ones whose approach and acting-style speak well with me.

So choose well, trust your instinct and be curious!
