EXPECT NOTHING AND HOPE FOR THE BEST: Radtai’s Top 10 Acting Tips
10) Expect Nothing and Hope for the Best
- Expect nothing
Shakespeare says …
“Expectation is the root of all heartache”
“Expect” means believe that (someone or something) will arrive soon.
It ruins everything including your ability to do your best. It is crucial for creative people not to expect rewards too soon. Mark Rylance spent 2 decades to hone his acting craft, he denied Spielberg’s offer for a role in a film once before finally accepted to do Bridge of Spies which Rylance won an Oscar for Best Supporting actor. Bong Joon Ho was blacklisted by far right government, it made it difficult for him to make films, he refused though to tone down his leftist voice. If they expected a reward, bribe, or an Oscar would Rylance’s performance in Bridge of Spies or Bong’s Parasite came out differently? I ‘m not sure. Would they won? Who knows. But I’m sure that when you got an expectation, extra stresses and unwanted pressures are there. You are not free. As a result, you lost the ownership which is not a good place for creative people to be mediocre.
- Hope for the Best
Shakespeare writes …
“We know who we are but we know not what we may be”
“Hope” means want something to happen or be the case.
It is much more positive to hope that things are going to be good. So you do not set stone that something rewarding has to happen. You hope, however, it will turn out nice. As a result, you lost no enthusiasm to do a good work. Plus, you still have that freedom to be creative, and the ownership which makes you unique and stand out of the crowd.
Don’t be too hard on yourself or overdo things, high expectations will kill you…
Be nice to yourself, keep doing nice things, keep contributing, persistence is the key…
Happy New Year
